Why Subscription Licenses?

For many years we were trying hard to make the business model with the perpetual licenses and the free support sustainable. It sort of worked. And it didn't. We were obviously alive and well -- but we were too slow.

The reality is that in a typical user organization the BotDetect is a part of a particular project forever; while administrators, webmasters and developers assigned to that project are changing all the times. Over the years, we were answering the same questions to the ever-changing employees of the same users over and over again. And due to our huge user base that support was strangulating us.

Sometime in 2010/12 we started selling the premium support (bundled with the maintenance) as an optional subscription in order to make it work. It did not.

At the end we had to face the reality. The perpetual licenses are gone. The premium support and maintenance are bundled with the licenses into the new subscription licenses.

The free support will be moved to the support forum, and opened to the community participation. Our free support efforts will be scaled down. We are still going to be doing it; but only if/when we have a free time to do so.

Licensing Changes

If you purchased your BotDetect 3 License before 2014/12/01

Since you bought your BotDetect License we changed our licensing twice.

Please take your time and read carefully about those changes before upgrading -- it might save you a significant amount of money in the years to come.

  • Those with the multiple Website and/or Domain Licenses should seriously consider the Enterprise License.
  • Those who previously bought the Developer License just because of the source code, and do not need the distribution rights, should seriously consider the Blueprint License.

2014/12/01:

The goal of the changes was to simplify the license compliance tracking for BotDetect users by adopting an all-you-can-eat approach to licensing.

Enterprise License -- new

In addition to providing license compliance tracking simplification, the Enterprise License significantly lowers the cost for those who use BotDetect on multiple domains they own.

Developer License -- changed

'Per developer' licensing was discontinued. Since then, the Developer License covers all the developers within an user organization.

Hosting License -- changed

'Per server' licensing was discontinued. Since then, the Hosting License covers all the shared servers within an user organization.

2015/08/01:

The goals of the changes were:

  • to eliminate situations when a user has to buy multiple licenses, and
  • to end one-size-fits-all approach to the source code licensing and recognize that different users license the source code because of different reasons.

(Old) Developer License & Hosting License -- both discontinued

Users needing the source code and users needing the distribution rights were buying the (Old) Developer License. Their subsequent customer support requirements were very different.

Users needing the source code just for the in-house use didn't need the distribution rights at all. And users needing the distribution rights often needed the hosting rights too -- and subsequently had to acquire a separate Hosting License as well.

As a result, the (Old) Developer License is discontinued and replaced with the three new licenses (Blueprint, Developer, and OEM) to allow for more granular approach toward the users' source code licensing, and distribution & hosting rights needs.

The sale of the standalone Hosting License is discontinued as well; and the Hosting License is folded into the both Developer and OEM Licenses.

Blueprint License -- new

This is the (Old) Developer License minus the distribution rights -- but there is nothing in there preventing you from distributing our Free Version instead.

Like before, it includes the source code so you can satisfy whatever regulatory requirements your own websites might have, and on your own websites you can modify BotDetect whatever way you want.

If you had the (Old) Developer License before, the Blueprint License should be the first one to consider. And we believe it will satisfy the needs of the vast majority of users.

Developer License -- changed

The same name, but the very different license.

Like before, it includes the source code so you can satisfy whatever regulatory requirements your own websites might have, and on your own websites you can modify BotDetect whatever way you want.

Unlike before, LIMITED hosting rights are added to the license. But also unlike before, the distribution rights are somewhat LIMITED.

LIMITED in previous paragraph means that you can distribute and host unmodified version only.

OEM License -- new

The same as the new Developer License -- but without limitations -- so you can distribute and host modified versions (derivative works) as well.

You can think about OEM License as of the old Developer License and the old Hosting License merged -- with the relaxation of some packaging restrictions also added to the mix.
